Condoms: All you need to know

on May 12, 2022

What is a condom?

A condom is a cheap and reliable form of contraception. If your penis wore a sock, you could think of a condom as a latex sock for your penis.

It comes generally in the form of a foil packet which you tear to find a latex circle. This latex circle gets placed on the tip of the penis, and with your fingers you roll the condom down to the base of the penis.

Condoms are also referred to as a rubber in the USA.

Why are condoms good?

Condoms are good because they are cheap and are 98% effective at preventing pregnancy.
They are also highly recommend when sleeping with someone for the first time as they prevent STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

The create a barrier that keeps semen and other body fluids out of the vagina, rectum or mouth.

There are 4 types of condoms

  • A standard condom (generally made from latex, plastic or lambskin).
  • A lubricated condom (a thin coating of liquid on the condom for extra lubrication when having sex).
  • A spermicide-coated condom (This is a chemical called nontoxynol-9 that kills sperm)
  • A textured condom (this includes ribbed and studded types for extra pleasure.)

How long do condoms last?

Condoms can last up to 5 years if stored properly. Condoms stored in wallets are never recommended. If in any doubt always buy a fresh one to be safe.
